چکیده

An approach to image localized and propagating surface plasmon ~SP! modes is introduced. It is shown that scanning tunneling microscope ~STM!-electroluminescence, the radiative decay of SPs induced by inelastically tunneling electrons, observed in Fourier space yields distinct features that reflect the degree of delocalization and spatial distribution of SP modes. The propagating SP is isolated from the localized mode by way of this Fourier space imaging approach. Furthermore, a cylindrically symmetric spatial interference pattern is obtained when the STM-induced plasmon is created within a circular ‘‘corral’’ boundary condition. © 2004 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1649799#

Theory of Quantum Corrals and Quantum Mirages

Quantum corrals are two dimensional structures built atom by atom on an atomically clean metallic surface using a scanning tunneling microscope. These two dimensional structures “corral” electrons in the surface states of noble metals which lead to standing wave patterns in the electron density inside the quantum corral. We review the physics of quantum corrals and relate the signal of the scan...

Density-matrix approach for the electroluminescence of molecules in a scanning tunneling microscope.

The electroluminescence (EL) of molecules confined inside a nanocavity in the scanning tunneling microscope possesses many intriguing but unexplained features. We present here a general theoretical approach based on the density-matrix formalism to describe the EL from molecules near a metal surface induced by both electron tunneling and localized surface plasmon excitations simultaneously. It r...

Optical detection of ballistic electrons injected by a scanning-tunneling microscope.

We demonstrate a spectroscopic technique which is based on ballistic injection of minority carriers from the tip of a scanning-tunneling microscope into a semiconductor heterostructure. By analyzing the resulting electroluminescence spectrum as a function of tip-sample bias, both the injection barrier height and the carrier scattering rate in the semiconductor can be determined. This technique ...

Electroluminescence spectra in weakly coupled single-molecule junctions

We have combined ab initio quantum chemistry calculations with a rate-equation formalism to analyze electroluminescence spectra in single-molecule junctions, measured recently by several groups in scanning tunneling microscope setups. In our method, the entire vibrational spectrum is taken into account. Our method leads to good quantitative agreement with both the spectroscopic features of the ...
